Grey Donkeys

Hello. My spicy dan dan mee failed to show up for lunch :( So I settled with my very sweet iced barley and some yong tau foo bits from my friend's plate. I didn't bother reminding the lady at the stall because I had to walk quite a bit and the sweet barley felt like it was making my teeth sore, thus my appetite dwindled down.. Lazy, in other words.

Which reminds me of something that's been on my mind lately.. People are lazy nowadays, so very
lazy. If it's something that requires them to get up from their plastic chairs to get their dan dan mees themselves, or to make a call to talk or thank someone, or to pay that ghastly postphoned water bill, it takes more than a nudge or a gentle reminder. Yeah, those were things I was plain lazy to accomplish, though with full knowledge that it bears importance and urgency, especially if it involves another/others. And the best resemblance of my being lazy is probably that of a dumb, grey donkey who needs to be whipped (plural) to get my stubborn hooves advance a step forward (singular).. Imagine if I retreat backwards [plural x 100 + (-)singular = grey donkey mash]. Or another simple resemblance would be a jaywalker.

But more thought-provoking than a stubborn grey donkey is the laziness people have to care, to not compromise, to obey, to please God, to be different, to make sacrifices, to heed warnings, to admit, to listen to advice, to change, to contemplate, and yes also to exercise. Lazy to budge, lazy to move, lazy to act, lazy to progress (unless it means empowering their status in life, gaining head knowledge to achieve the aforesaid, getting more benjamins, so forth), lazy to improve, lazy to make stands, lazy to not be indifferent.

Maybe it's because of the lack of understanding, doubt, insecurity or fear. Or maybe because they're grey donkeys. Stubborn? Yes. Dumb? Maybe. Foolish most probably. Blinded; perhaps scarred (?). It's not for me to question the reasons behind the existence of such an 'epidemic' and why everyone is falling prey because I am stricken by it as well. But laziness confines the abundance there is to life; the potential in everyone that is hampered by their own neglect in areas of their lives which have been unattended to.

Everyone says they want to "live life to the fullest". To experience everything at least once, to be become a well-shaped individual, to have that I Want list checked and rechecked.. but really, what is there to take with you at the end of the day when you're deposited into the ground? What will you leave behind for people to remember you by? Someone who could booze like he was born in a keg? Someone who traveled 51 countries? Someone who has been to sex concerts? Someone who had a mindblowing extensive collection of shoes? Someone who was skilled at something? Someone with a keen sense of style? Someone who had great taste in music? Someone who was like a walking encyclopedia? Someone who made it big in the stockmarket? Someone who had a great sense of humor?

OK. But... so what? Fact is, someone else is doing the same thing or has done it 10 times better before you even knew you were good at it. In fact, everyone could probably do the same thing if they wanted to.. But before you know it, it doesn't make a difference to you, others or even God whether you've experienced this/that before and how well or even how bad you managed. No one will give a hoot, not even you at the end of day.

It's not what you do or do not that sums up the person whom you actually are. It's not the things that can be seen that counts, it's the unseen that matters most: how you do that something and why; the question of heart.

So where's the significance and substantiality in accomplishments and hoarded experiences that you don't even bring along with you when you're standing stark naked before your Maker? But those issues would only apply to those who think of things that far ahead.. because the rest are too lazy.

It's getting so stuffy in here. I'm getting hungry! Yay, pasta time! Time to get off the chair.

Back in KL

OK, quick! Before I get lazy to create a new entry! OK too late.

Hmmmm.. maybe I could.... hmmm

OK Quick, short note - I'm back in KL, miss Penang already. This place reeks of workload but am antipicating this coming semester.

Medan was good to me. It made me puke 4 times on the very bumpy ferry ride (bumpy as in dead bumpy, my butt got lifted off the seat a few times... cowabunga!), so I saved on food and I had something to do every hour and a half: reach for a black plastic bag. But the ride back was incomparably comfortable and took 5 instead of 6 hours, as scheduled.

Medan also offered good food which is very similar to Malaysian cuisine: had nasi padang (yummy), satay (good), great seafood (yummy goodness) by the roadside, etc. Also, Medan gave me a very good preview on what Indonesian traffic is like... and i just have to say that... I love Malaysian road infrastructure!!! And even Malaysian drivers, but that's a dangerous thing to say also. But yeah, Medan gave me nice, wobbly knees as people drive on the opposite direction of traffic, people drive a few milimeters from your vehicle, people come out from nowhere in all directions except for up and under, people honk as it is standard procedure, pedestrains pop up from nowhere and stroll across your path, 101 vehicles cross a junction in one go, traffic lights don't apply, and aaahhhhhh!!!

Medan has thought me that you will never go bored driving there and that you have to be on the lookout for others as they are not on the lookout for you. And also you have to drive a big vehicle, preferably a 4WD if not you'll get driven over by a 4WD or the ferocious Angkots (Angkotan Kota = public transportation, vans) or you'll drive into a pothole and never be seen again or you'll have zero suspension in a few days. Also, you can tint your windows to 100% because it's allowed. So that means, you can do whatever you want on the road and escape from being glared at by another driver who hates whatever you just committed against him (eg driving a nicer car than yours) because he won't be able to see your happy face.

And also, Medan shared no sinks with me. The house where I stayed in and also the hotel in Parapat (where the beautiful Lake Toba is) and the toilet I went to at the petrol station (somewhere on the way back to Medan from Parapat), had no sinks. I didn't mind though, because it's better than no toilet. And there were also no flushing devices, so it's the bucket system but of course there were appropriate toilet bowls, just like the ones you have at home. But the absence of sinks and flushes do not apply to all households/locations.

And if you are thinking of going there, it would be advisable to have friends who are from there, to host you, or drive you around. Especially if you're a mademoiselle. Squeezing at the back of the speedy vans (no buses there, the vans are the form of public transportation) facing many other squeezers is not too desirable, lest you look like Jean Claude. I had the pleasure of a gentleman (wink) who basically made the whole trip a comfortable thus enjoyable one.

Hey, that was supposed to be a short note.

Grunt.

Check!

Ooo!! I'll be going to Medan! On Wednesday, 13 July 2005 for about 5 days! Ooo! I haven't packed. So I'll have my last item on my Penang To-Do List checked! And also, I've been driving further than 5 mins from my house! :) Whoopee! Another check. Now to bake a cake.

So anyhow, we'll be taking the ferry to Belawan from Port Swettenham (yes, that is in Penang, not in some sweaty place where ham comes from eg Arizona) where we will be greeted by a Chocolatechipcookie who will bring us to Medan by car. Grateful, I am. Ferry ride's about 5 hours.. Besides listening to music, reading (I hope I'll be able to in the ferry coz I can't in the car), snoozing and snacking too often... I need some suggestions on what could help keep me from jumping off the ferry and into choppy waters. OK! This is where you start thinking _____

I've been told that Medan is a lot like Penang but with worse drivers and traffic, so... canlah. We'll be visiting Lake Toba in Parapat, and that's a few hours from Medan. Spending a night there because there's this interesting island to be all touristy (ooo word creation time! Handy when I can't think of the real English term for... touristy!) about : the Samosir island. Ah, Pulau Samosir, where there's supposedly the more primitive Bataks all in a happy island in the middle of Danau Toba. I hope I don't offend anyone there, because they were (maybe they still are now.......... I is not wanting to know) cannibalistic in the 19th century.

So anyhow, before I ruin my trip by talking too much about it... I shall look for something to eat.

The Believer's Freedom

A passage Paul wrote to the Corinthians that spoke to me when I needed it.

1 Corinthians 10:23-33
23"Everything is permissible"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"—but not everything is constructive. 24Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.
25 Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, 26for, "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it."[
c]

27 If some unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience. 28But if anyone says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, both for the sake of the man who told you and for conscience' sake[
d]— 29the other man's conscience, I mean, not yours. For why should my freedom be judged by another's conscience? 30 If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?

31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God — 33 even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.

Yeehaw. I took some chocolate just now. And some nangka. And now I'm hungry again. I hope the dinner tonight will suffice.

The Cadbury chocolate I'm suppose to finish by the 12th this month, is halfway through the process! The consumption slowed down a little because of other distractions in the fridge like fruits and yogurt, so I neglected the Cadbury for a bit. And now my fingers smell of nangka plus a little chocolatey touch. Grumble.

Pg To-Do List

Things I have done in Penang (with reference to the previous There Are Many Things I Wanna Do In Penang list) :

  • Eat. I must be in another state to not have this checked. Had Penang's famous oysters and other famous stuff which actually just means "Better Than Your State's" :D
  • See my dog, Snoopy. Couldn't miss him, he was waiting at the door.
  • Spend time with Rion (sister) and her new digicam heheh. Her digicam is currently in the custody of someone else and I am not happy! No! I am not!
  • Spend time with parents (they'll be there, I have to spend time with them). It's all good!
  • Spend time with my highschool friends. Many of them are not around, they're away in another state or went off to a public uni recently. I have to grab the ones that are left before it's too late! How come no one calls me when I'm back, hmm? I always have to do the dirty job (in Mexican immigrant slang). Heheh nolah nolah. They're all worth the grime :)
  • Cook/bake. I have cooked, yet to bake!
  • Exercise. Erm, I think... but actually... it's not like... Next.
  • Haha! Haha!
  • Shop (shoes, wallet, sunglasses.Hmm.. I feel another list coming). I have been disappointed /ing, very. How can... The only things I've bought were all found in the grocery aisles and one from Guardian. Why are there no sale attractions these days?
  • Drive (I don't care, I want to do this. I DO have a licence) . I have driven but I want to go further than 5 mins from my house :) So this counts as unchecked.
  • Travel (I might be traveling within the region/country with Val. Where should we go?) OK, she's suggested Cambodia and maybe Medan won't be such a bad idea. But we'll see. Where should we go?

Seaweed Snack

There's this packet of Korean Jaban Seasoned Seaweed Snack on the dining table at home. And the seaweed snack is packed in a ziplock/resealable packet to ward off harmful bacteria and the seaweed's grieving family whose loved one is no more.

On the top of the packet, below where it says 'Tear Here', is the advice of its Korean manufacterer, 'Seaweed Good Sushi No Co., Ltd.', to us, the fellow consumers. The instructions are given in Korean, and translated in English below it.

The instructions are...

LKSAJSIE ASKJDEIU OIQWEIOJQ LKASDOIJ
ALSDILOVEKIMCHISAJDUIEAKD
SKDSJFCWY

PLEASE CLOSE THE ZIPPER FOR BALANCE AFTER
CONSUME WITHOUT AIR INSIDE.

I want to know, why I still read it 5 times a row and then I read it another 3 times. What zoes eeeet meeeennnn????

Note: This is not a fake product. It was given the ISO 9001 Certificate, and should be found in major marts or somewhere deep inside your fridge. It's pretty good, the seaweed inside is not in its regular rectangular form, but in flakes.

My Peti Sejuk

Now that I'm back home home, I open the refrigerator door and I'm standing in front of a whole happy habitat of food I've missed gazing at. Lots of food. So much food that half of the species has already been extinct (expired) but still kept 'fresh', thanks to effective temperatures (thank you ol' National, you are a good fridge brand), and many other surviving species lie in between the likes of brand spanking new and brand unspanking unnew. Fine, old.

I made the disturbing discovery of old stocks when I first noticed a big bar of Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate at the fridge door. Hooha goody! It was all intact and new, and purple (Cadbury comes only in purple or something). And so I took it (I think I felt a surge of power as my fingers felt the contours of the squares under the purple); lo and behold, i saw the black dates (tarikh, bukan itu kurma) in typewriter font : 12 JULY 2005. Twelvth Julyyyyy?????!!!! How CAAANNNNN???!!! And so now I'm on a mission to finish the whole of Cadbury's 200g bar of healthy cocoa that's good for my body and fatty tissues. I've managed to finish the first 2 rows of squares. Cheer me on...

Also, when I made some pasta, I wanted to put minced beef in it, and that expired yesterday, 30 June 2005. And I made that pasta... yesterday, 30 June 2005. But I'm still alive and not standing around in the middle of the road chewing on grass (but people seem to be taking lots of wheatgrass, alfalfa, spirulina, and moss lately), which I threw up and digested 3 times already.

And with pasta, comes cheese, which is also a must to add on to fatty tissues. The parmesan cheese in the drawer of my trusty fridge will leave this earth on July 27th 2005. But that doesn't mean it leaves the vicinity of the fridge anytime soon. I think it deserves to transform into something else, like yogurt if possible. Cheesy yogurt, mmm.

There are maaaany other things found in the dark depths of my fridge that has been around since there was just enough storage space in the fridge to squeeze the food in. Old chocolates, some pears (or maybe they were apples before), some asam jawa, shriveled up vegetables, dried cheese, etc.

And even my mother's Nivea Milk Lotion which has been in the same spot for... I think 7-8 years, possibly more. I remember using it when I was younger and still in school uniform. No kidding. And it's still usable (again, I'm not joking. It does not smell sourish and it's still white). If you want to extend the longevity of your skincare products like lotions and creams, just put them in your fridge. It's cooling when you apply it, and you can enjoy that effect for the next decade. And if you are feeling more adventurous, you could go the distance and put it up in your freezer. That way, you can safe keep it for your children's grandfather's children's grandkids.

So if you actually take the time to rummage through your fridge (if it's stocked with laaarge amounts of foodstuff), you might also discover that many things are going bad this July 2005. So go go go, throw eat before it's too late!
